Books on Mindful Activism

Books to read by Thich Nhat Hanh

In these turbulent times, I find myself searching for ways to become engaged and help people in my community. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of suffering in the world–it can even be paralyzing at times. One of my favorite spiritual authors, Thich Nhat Hanh, a monk and activist, provides valuable insight into the art of confronting suffering without allowing it to control you. In order to make a difference in the world, we must first change ourselves from within.

As the renowned poet, Rumi writes:

Thich Nhat Hanh’s books not only encourage us to face our own suffering, but to help others to do the same. As a monk, he took it upon himself to heal the world around him. He raised funds to assist war-ridden communities, founded a youth school for social service, and established international monasteries as oases of calm and restoration. Much of his work also explores the link between environmental exploitation and the mistreatment of marginalized communities.

I find his work to be truly admirable, and believe that if we can all adopt, even a semblance of the compassion and consideration he had for others, we can help to create a more harmonious world. I’ve curated a list of his books below.

  1. Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet

This is possibly one of my favorites, as it comments on the link between ecological degradation and systemic oppression, teaching us how to strengthen our connection to the natural world.

2. No Mud, No Lotus

This book teaches us the art of transmuting suffering into courage. It includes some structured meditations and mantras for readers to practice.

3. Call Me By My True Names

This is one of his most beautiful poetry books regarding the interconnectedness of all beings and nature. As a poetry lover, I can say that this is a must read.

4. At Home in the World

Based on Thich Nhat Hanh’s own life experiences, and written in a memoir style, this book teaches us how to be mindful in times of despair.

I hope you will consider exploring some of Nhat Hanh’s work. Needless to say, he has left an immense legacy, and if we turn to his wisdom, we will be able to find a flicker of hope, in the midst of darkness. By confronting our own suffering, we can make a difference for others in our community.
